Froghall Lower Plane

LINKS

This is the view down Froghall Lower Plane, originally part of the 1804 Caldon Low Tramroad but reused by the 1847 railway. The stone bases carried the mountings for the wooden brake drum that controlled the descent of laden wagons while hauling up the empties. The car park at the bottom was originally a loading basin on the Caldon Canal for the 1804 tramroad. It was filled in to make way for railway sidings when a link to the Churnet Valley line was layed over the bed of the former Uttoxeter Canal after it closed in 1849. The paths leading off to the left and right of the picture were sidings leading to the tops of limekilns, limestone piles and stone crushers.
